A QR code (Quick Response code) is a two-dimensional matrix barcode invented in 1994 by Masahiro Hara at Denso Wave, Japan. Unlike traditional barcodes that store data in one direction, QR codes encode information both horizontally and vertically, allowing them to hold up to 7,089 numeric characters or 4,296 alphanumeric characters in a single image.
QR codes use four standardized error correction levels defined by ISO/IEC 18004: Level L recovers 7% of data, Level M recovers 15%, Level Q recovers 25%, and Level H recovers 30%. This redundancy allows QR codes to remain scannable even when partially obscured — which is why logos can be placed in the center without breaking functionality.
As of 2026, QR code usage has grown to over 2.4 billion smartphone users worldwide who can scan QR codes natively through their camera app. The global QR code market is valued at approximately $12.6 billion and is projected to reach $33.1 billion by 2030, driven by contactless payments, digital menus, and marketing automation.
